March Trees

5x7" oil on canvas board. $40. Available here!

Even in March, the trees are still bare, and you can see through the branches to the scene behind them. I've been experimenting, trying to figure out how best to capture that effect. This is based on a photo I took from the bus on the Isle of Wight. I really like the colours in this, I find them very calming.

Shelter at Sunrise

6x6” oil on canvas board.SOLD

Another painting from my sunrise reference; this time I included more of the pavement and the shelter. I really love its shape.

Red Sunrise

6x8" oil on canvas board. $45. Available here.

Here's an impression of a sunrise I saw while on my trip- it was cold, but spectacular, the sun a fiery orb with dark grey below and a haze of reds and golds above. I plan to do a series of paintings from the photos I took exploring the colour in different ways.

Appley Tower From The Beach

6x8" oil on canvas board. $25. Available here!

Another painting of the Isle of Wight. One morning I walked down the beach at low tide, and came across a Victorian folly, Appley Tower. I really liked how it stood out, pale stone against dark trees. The tide goes out a long way, but pools of water remain here and there, reflecting trees and sky. The sand has many different textures and colours. It was fun trying to capture them without distracting from the main focus of the painting.

The Needles

6x6" oil on canvas board. $20. Available here!

I recently spent a week on the Isle of Wight visiting family and now that I'm home I am busy painting from all of my sketches, plein air studies and reference photos. This is the view of the Needles from the cliffs over Alum Bay. Here's what Wiki has to say about the Needles:
"The Needles is a row of three distinctive stacks of chalk that rise out of the sea off the western extremity of the Isle of Wight, UK, close to Alum Bay. The Needles Lighthouse stands at the outer, western end of the formation... The formation takes its name from a fourth needle-shaped pillar called 'Lot's Wife' that collapsed in a storm in 1764. The remaining rocks are not at all needle-like, but the name has stuck."

Haverstock Hill, Hampstead

7x5" oil on canvas board - $20
Available here

Here's a painting of a shop on Haverstock Hill, London. I grew up in this part of the city, so the red-and-white architecture makes me think of home, but it's incredibly difficult to paint, especially on such a small canvas.

House Behind Trees

5x7" acrylic on watercolour paper. SOLD

Here’s another local scene, a house on a street corner partly hidden behind trees. I really liked the strong contrasts of green trees and red brick here, and the style of windows.

The Alley

5x7" acrylic on watercolour paper. SOLD

This is a local scene- a small alley that leads onto our local nature reserve. I decided to try to capture the view. I really like the way the foliage came out, but I am also happy with the buildings and the little car.

Chilean Mountain

5x7" acrylic on watercolour paper. $40
Available on Daily Paintworks here

Another acrylic on paper, this one is a mountain in Chile. I really love its bold shape, and the range of golds and greens in the foreground.

Reflections of Tree Trunks

5x7" oil on canvas board. $40
Available on Daily Paintworks here

I am captivated by reflections in water! Here's a little painting of tree trunks reflected in a small stream. I really like the colours in this one. A spring palette; the green is starting to break through the brown of a cold, muddy winter.

I'm going to be visiting family next week, so I'm going to try and schedule a bunch of posts so this blog keeps itself updated while I'm away. Hopefully it works!

Fennel Study

6x6” oil on canvas board.SOLD

It was really interesting trying to capture the different colours within the white part of the fennel. The rich blue provided a nice contrast to the soft pinks and yellows.

Shopping Day

6x6” oil on canvas board. SOLD

Here's an older still life that I forgot to post here. I went out on a 'charity shop crawl' looking for bits and pieces to paint, and picked up some nice little vases, saucers and bits of glassware. But I was most fond of this tiny copper jug. The green item is glass, I am not sure what it is for, but it casts nice shadows across the surface when the light shines through it.

Reflections in the Lake

6x6” oil on canvas board. $40
Available on Daily Paintworks here

Here’s another landscape painting featuring many of my favourite things; a moody sky, mountains, pine trees and a lake. I am quite proud of the brushwork in this one.

Three Daffodils

8x8” acrylic on canvas board. $55
Available on Daily Paintworks here

I had some fresh tubes of yellow paint so I decided to do a study of some daffodils. Trying to capture their shape, and all the different shades of yellow, was a real challenge.

Snowy Evening

6x6” oil on canvas board. $40
Available on Daily Paintworks here

Here's a late-evening scene of a snowy field. I find it really interesting painting snow at different times of day. It goes through many different colours as the light changes.

The End Of Winter

6x6” oil on canvas board. $40
Available on Daily Paintworks here

I'm trying to get better at painting buildings, and including them in landscapes- here's a painting of a little village in the shadow of a mountain, with snow slowly melting away along the side of the road. Now that we're finally hitting the (supposedly) end of winter, I'm... painting lots of snow scenes. Nothing like being out-of-season with your art!

I'm really happy with the colours in this painting, I like the range of blues and reds.

Lemon Wedges

6x6" acrylic on canvas board. $20 - £13.49 - €18.33 – C$ 27.76
Available from Daily Paintworks here

When life gives you lemons, paint them. But make sure you prop them up more carefully than I did- mine collapsed halfway through the painting process and I couldn't get them to sit quite the same way again...
